- A section of brand new York City in northern New york bordering in the Harlem and East streams. Peter Stuyvesant established the Dutch settlement of Nieuw Haarlem here in 1658. An instant increase of African Americans starting c. 1910 made it one of the largest Black communities in america. In the 1920s a flowering of African-American art and literature had been referred to as Harlem Renaissance. After World War II numerous Hispanics settled in East (or Spanish) Harlem.
