optical isomerism definition

  • noun:
    • the problem or connection of particular (isomeric) substances, which, while chemically identical (for the reason that they usually have the exact same composition, the exact same molecular weights, and the exact same ultimate constitution), are however literally different, like in their action on polarized light, as dextro- and lævo-tartaric acids, and/or sugars galactose and sugar. Such compounds discover frequently a minumum of one unsymmetrical carbon atom and typically more than one. See Unsymmetrical.
