Synonyms Oppose, Resist, Withstand, combat, strive against, contravene. 1st three words are all instead general, but oppose isn't quite therefore powerful as the other individuals, as suggesting less of physical action; each of them mostly communicate the notion of receiving versus making the assault, but oppose is the very least limited to that meaning.
