a light, combustible, gaseous hydrocarbon, CH4, produced artificially by the dried out distillation of many organic substances, and happening as a normal item of decomposition in stagnant swimming pools, whence its title. It's an abundant ingredient of ordinary illuminating gas, and it is initial person in the paraffin series. Known as in addition methane, plus coal mines, fire-damp.
