    • A Chinese provincial tax levied at numerous inland channels upon imports or articles in transportation.
    • A tax, originally of one cash per tael on the value of all sales, imposed by the people of China upon themselves, in order to make up the deficiency in the land-tax, during the Taiping rebellion (1850–64). It was to be set apart for military purposes only, and was intended to be merely a temporary measure.
