Synonyms Insurgent, Rebel, Traitor. An insurgent is different from a rebel chiefly in level. The insurgent opposes the execution of a specific legislation or scheme of rules, and/or undertaking of some certain measure, or he wishes in order to make a demonstration and only some measure or even to express discontent; the rebel attempts to overthrow or change the federal government, or he revolts and tries to place his country under another jurisdiction. A traitor is the one which breaks faith or trust by betraying his country or breaking his allegiance, specifically a sworn allegiance: your message is applied in powerful reprobation to at least one which, even without express breach of faith, makes war upon his sovereign or nation, or covers through the part that their commitment is born. See insurrection.
