dead metaphor definition

  • noun:
    • an old metaphor that has in effect lost its metaphorical status and become literal, e.g. "electric present" (electricity is at first thought to be analogous to liquid). Not to be confused with stale metaphor (a form of cliché), though it usually is.
    • a metaphor which have happened so frequently that it is now a unique meaning of the expression (e.g., `he is a snake' may once are a metaphor but after many years of put it to use features died and start to become a unique sense of the phrase `serpent')
