axis of a curve definition

  • noun:
    • a straight range which bisects something of parallel chords of a curve; called a principal axis, when cutting them at right angles, whereby it divides the curve into two shaped portions, as in the parabola, that has one such axis, the ellipse, that has two, and/or group, which includes an infinite number. Both axes of ellipse are the significant axis plus the minor axis, additionally the two axes associated with the hyperbola would be the transverse axis and conjugate axis.
