Same as hypnotism, at some point think become considering a force more or less analogous to magnetism, which, it had been alleged, is produced in pet tissues, and passes from a single body to another with or without real contact. The presence of such a force, and its own potentiality for the cure of infection, were asserted by Mesmer in 1775. His theories and methods had been a short while later known as mesmerism, a name which was popularly applied to theories and claims not put forward by Mesmer himself.
