In which these terms tend to be put on pain, etc., alleviate is lighten notably, and particularly in a soothing means; alleviate and allay get beyond alleviate, removing in huge measure or altogether. Mitigate would be to make mild, less serious; maybe it appears midway between alleviate and reduce. Assuage is settle down, and that idea underlies all its utilizes; allay conveys likewise the notion of placing to rest.
