In carpentry: A tie or brace. The whole piece of content created by a brace as well as the timbers which it joins.
In architecture, the work of placing two pillars, articles, or pilasters close together, so as to develop a pair, on the other hand with comparable pieces that are spaced much more extensively. Accouplement is unusual in ancient buildings once we know them, it is common in contemporary work.
