abugida definition

    • A writing system, similar to a syllabary, by which each image represents a consonant with a certain vowel. Some languages which use abugidas are Amharic, Hindi, Burmese, Cree and Ojibwe (Canadian Aboriginal syllabics). An abugida is a kind of syllabary in which the vowel is changed by modifying the bottom consonant logo, in order for all of the forms that represent certain consonant plus each vowel resemble one another.
