A city of southeast Rhode Island during the lips of Narragansett Bay south-southeast of Providence. Settled in 1639, it was a significant economic center in pre-Revolutionary times and in the nineteenth century became a fashionable summer resort where affluent built palatial "cottages.” The mansions and restored colonial structures still attract tourists toward town, as do its playing tennis museum and yachting services. Population: 24,400.
