A genus of huge salamanders; in some classifications within the genus Cryptobranchus.
An Asiatic genus associated with family Protonopsidæ (or Crypto-branchidæ), having four small but well-formed legs, with no gill-slits; the giant salamanders. M. maximus is the largest living amphibian, attaining a length of three legs or more. Its found in Japan plus some components of continental Asia.
