Originally satisfied by the Livs, a Finnic individuals, the area had been conquered into the 13th century by German knights, the Livonian Brothers for the Sword. After the dissolution of this order (1561), Livonia had been contested by Poland, Russia, and Sweden, finally getting a Russian province in 1783. In 1918 Livonia had been split between Estonia and Latvia.
