Thirty-two species and subspecies of the purchase are now actually recognized, all put into the genus Procavia (Storr, 1780), this name antedating Hyrax by 3 years. A fossil types, Pliohyrax krnppii, was explained through the Pliocene of Greece plus the Isle of Samos, and Archæohyrax, from Miocene of Patagonia, happens to be assigned to the group.
