Hammerstein, Oscar 1846?-1919. German-born American operatic supervisor just who founded opera homes in Harlem (1888) and New york (1906). His grandson Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960), a lyricist, collaborated on many musicals and is most commonly known for his attempts with Richard Rodgers, particularly Oklahoma! (1943) in addition to Sound of musical (1959).
