American composer just who brought jazz idiom to classical songs types in the orchestral works, like Rhapsody in Blue (1924), and composed the ratings for a lot of music comedies. His collaborations along with his cousin, lyricist Ira Gershwin (1896-1983), through the opera Porgy and Bess (1935).
