A historical region and former duchy of Italy in present-day northeast Italy and Slovenia. Occupied by the Romans in the second century B.C., it became a Lombard duchy into the 6th century A.D. and ended up being conquered by different individuals and says before becoming ceded to Italy in 1866 (the western component) and 1919 (the east part). Eastern Friuli was awarded to Yugoslavia by pact in 1947.
