Dudley, Robert. First Earl of Leicester. 1532?-1588. English courtier, politician, and favorite of Elizabeth I. Pardoned for his participation when you look at the land to secure the throne for Lady Jane Grey (1553), he sought the hand of Elizabeth, who refused him, partially because his partner, Amy Robsart, had died (1560) under dubious circumstances.
Dudley, Thomas 1576-1653. English-born American colonial administrator just who served as governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony (1634, 1640, 1645, and 1650) and also as among Harvard university's very first overseers. Their son Joseph (1647-1720) was also governor of Massachusetts (1702-1715).
